ASHLAND — American Health Centers will have the “Biggest Loser” weight-loss program again at three of its gyms, including the one on Winchester Avenue.

Response to the program was so good last year that AHC decided to expand, said fitness director Jimmy Billheimer.

Last year, more than 70 interviewed for the four “Biggest Loser” spots in the program. This year there will be eight spots in Ashland and four each at gyms in Huntington and Chesapeake.

The winner of “Biggest Loser” competitions among the 16 contestants will receive a free one-year membership to an AHC gym. Also, he or she will go through the eight-week weight loss program at no charge.

Contestants will meet three times a week with a personal trainer and also be given nutruitional meal plans to follow. Billheimer said contestants aren’t selected on size alone.

“It’s not necessarily the most overweight person,” he said. “It’s not about that. It’s who is going to be ready, committed and worthy of us giving this opportunity. We give you healthy facts and how to lose weight and how to change your life.”

He said the program was started because the Tri-State area has been labeled as one of “the unhealthiest places” around.

“During our interviews last year we had people we talked to who didn’t know what to do and needed help,” he said. “We have the tools and can give you the knowledge.”

Despite only selecting four for the “Biggest Loser” competition last year, Billheimer said several others who interviewed went through similar programs at AHC with good results.

“Anybody that comes through and registers we’re offering some kind of discounts or promotions,” he said.

Here is the interview schedule:

‰Chespeake from 6 to 8 p.m. today

‰Huntington from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday

‰Ashland from 6 to 8 p.m. Feb. 21

Winners will be chosen based on several variables, he said, including percentage of change in body fat, inches and total weight loss.

“But it’s not necessairly the person who loses the most weight,” he said.
