Drawing upon the experience of thousands of stitches over many decades, visitors to today’s Quilter’s Day Out will find a wealth of resources available for the traditional and utilitarian art form.
“It’s for first-timers and non-quilters,” said Nancy Osborne, one of the organizers with the Greenup County Quilt Guild, the group hosting the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society District 10 (FIVCO) area Quilter’s Day Out at the University of Kentucky Extension Office on Ky. 23, at the intersection with the Industrial Parkway, in Wurtland from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today.
Osborne said “Kentucky quilts” of all sorts will be on display, along with opportunities to learn quilting techniques and pick up quilt-making supplies.
“Everybody wants to see Kentucky quilts,” Osborne said, explaining quilts made by different artists from Boyd, Carter, Elliott, Greenup and Lawrence counties crafted over a period of decades will be exhibited.
In 1990, Phyllis D. Miller of Kentucky started Quilter’s Day Out on the third Saturday in March, Osborne said. The celebration was later declared National Quilting Day and is now celebrated around the world as International Quilting Day. The Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society District 10 celebration will feature special events, quilt exhibits, demonstrations of quilting techniques and a “mini-mall” by members with items for sale. Light refreshments will be served by the Greenup Quilters.
“Some of these ladies might be selling quilts or quilt tops,” Osborne said, noting the “mini-mall” portion of the event, with quilters selling their “books and extra supplies” for prices considerably less than retail.
“Admission is free. Come and visit with us,” Osborne said, noting the quilt show is an excellent pairing with the nearby annual model railroad show.
“We welcome visitors to bring quilts to share. Come by the UK Extension Office to see Kentucky Quilts and then go out to Greenbo State Park to the Railroad Show,” she said.
