Verity students have vote on school name changes

ASHLAND — Verity Middle School students put together its own unofficial vote on the potential name changes of the middle school and Paul G. Blazer High School on Friday.

Three hundred of the 419 students voted. They were asked three questions:

Are you in favor of changing the name of Verity Middle School to Ashland Middle School?

74 percent voted no and 26 percent voted yes.

Are you in favor of changing the name of Blazer High School to Ashland High School?

69 percent voted no and 31 percent voted yes.

(If you answered yes to No. 1): Are you in favor of a compromise name such as Ashland Verity Middle School?

Of the 26 percent voting for the change, 69 percent voted no and 31 percent voted yes.

Larry Bailey, an English teacher at Verity Middle School, had his students write persuasive letters to the school board either for or against the change. They were also planning on attending the Feb. 28 board meeting if the name change issue is on the agenda.

Bailey’s seventh-grade students met with school board members Charlie Chatfield and Molly Webb earlier in the week for a question-and-answer forum.

The suggestion of the possibe name change was in the minutes of the board’s January meeting.

Since then the community has been torn over what they would like to have happen at the middle school and high school.

Ashland High School was renamed Paul G. Blazer High School in the fall of 1962.

When Coles and Putnam junior highs merged in 1979, the middle school was named George M. Verity Middle School.
