ASHLAND — City New Year’s Eve party set

ASHLAND

A free New Year’s Eve party is planned, sponsored by the city of Ashland and the city’s recreation department.

The party, which is scheduled from 9 p.m. to midnight, includes light refreshments, door prizes, party favors and entertainment at the Highlands Museum and  Discovery Center at 1620 Winchester Ave.

Doors will open at 8:45 p.m. Peanuts the Clown will create balloon art for children.

Music will be provided byMegan Dotson, Katie Owens and Bobby Blanton at First Baptist Church Christian Life Center, which is at 1623 Winchester Ave.

The celebration includes a ball drop at midnight at Judd Plaza, which is at 16th Street and Winchester Avenue.

The event is open to children accompanied by an adult.

Blaine boy chosen for talen showcase

BLAINE

Shawn Weston Thacker of Blaine, formerly of Johns Creek, has been selected by a national talent scout to attend a talent showcase in Orlando next year.

Applause International, a national talent agency known for discovering and developed new acting, singing and modeling talent since 1995, saw Thacker at an audition and chose him to attend the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (ARTS), a five-day competition where the best and brightest talent from all around the United States and other countries will perform and compete for prizes, trophies, as well as acting opportunities and modeling contracts.

Thacker and other ARTS competitors will get to meet, learn from, perform for and interview with talent scouts and casting directors from major markets all over the country, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Miami.  In attendance will be representatives from the entertainment industry including such organizations as Disney, Nickelodeon, Tyler Perry Studios, New York Film Academy, Vision Models, Sony Music, and Epic Records. Thacker will spend the next few months attending various entertainment industry workshops and an industry-level photo shoot to prepare for the ARTS showcase next summer.

 Thacker, 7, son of Shawn and Shawna Thacker, attends Blaine Elementary School where he is a member of the Blaine Dance Team.  He is also a cub scout.  His interests include baseball, music, hip hop dancing, modeling and acting.

     One minor injury was reported after a passenger car collided with an ambulance at the intersection in front of the Paramount Arts Center on Winchester Avenue around 10 a.m. Tuesday. Independent videographer Adam Black witnessed the accident and reported the ambulance was traveling south of Winchester with lights on and siren activated when it was struck in the rear quarter panel by a passenger vehicle that had a green light for the intersection and failed to yield for the emergency vehicle.
