Those who visit the Pendleton Art Center during tonight’s First Friday art walk will have the chance to spin the wheel for handcrafted prizes.
The center is offering its version of Wheel of Fortune. Those who enter sign up for a chance to spin the wheel, made by John Vanover, husband of decorative painter Marcia Vanover who has a studio at the center. Those who win a chance to spin are highly likely to win a prize: While some of the spaces will be blank, most of the spaces on which the dial can land contain numbers that correspond to a prize, Melanie Osborne, a painter who has a studio at the center.
She said there is no charge to try to win a change at a spin and you don’t have to be present to win; if your name is called and you aren’t present, Pendleton representatives will spin for you and give you a call; you can pick up your prize the next day during Second Look Saturday.
The first spin will be at 7 p.m. and will continue until 8:30 p.m., or until all the prizes have been awarded.
Art to be awarded as prizes will hang in the gallery. Denise Spaulding, another painter who has a studio at the center, said it’s impossible to determine the value of the prizes because they won’t know until the last minute which artists contributed which items to the event. However, she said because of the diversity of artists at the center, awards could include paintings, prints, photography sessions, pottery, jewelry, decorative gourds, fabric items and discounts on items.
Spaulding said the idea was developed during a meeting of the artists who have studios at the Pendleton as a way of offering the public something different and promoting the talent in the center.
Spaulding said if the event goes over well with attendees, the center will offer Wheel of Fortune two times a year.
“We hope it turns into something people look forward to every year,” Osborne said.
Jeff Carter will provide music at the Pendleton during the event.
Summer Motion will continue with a performance by The Chase, followed by Styx.
