Kentucky Elks convene in Ashland

ASHLAND — Elks Club members from across Kentucky are in Ashland for the 112th annual state convention beginning today.

Representatives from nearly all of the state’s 17 Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks lodges are in town for two days of club activities hosted by the Ashland Elks at 900 Carter Ave.

Skip Saunders, former Elks state president and member of the Ashland club, said the convention began Thursday night with a dinner for all past state presidents.

Today’s and Saturday’s activities will consist of several business meetings for club members. The convention will end on a high note Saturday night with a black-tie dinner.

Saunders said newly elected officers will be installed this weekend, bringing Ashland member Richard Moore in as the new state president, and his wife, Jane Moore, as first lady.

Though club activities are not open to the public, it is open to Elks members nationwide.

He said West Virginia Elks State President Jim McIntyre and First Lady Kim McIntyre will attend this year, along with current Kentucky State President Gary Hayden and First Lady Sarah Hayden of Owensboro.

About 200 Elks are expected to visit the Ashland Lodge. State conventions are typically at the home lodge of the incoming president.

Ashland currently has the largest club in the state, with approximately 1,200 members.
