Healthy Choices Kentucky, a consortium formed as a response to eastern Kentucky’s high obesity rates, has launched its website at www.healthychoiceskentucky.com to serve as a community resource for healthy exercise and diet.
The Healthy Choices Kentucky website includes a calendar of upcoming events as well as resources for better living, divided into the categories of exercise and eating. The website also contains a section detailing the projects of Healthy Choices Kentucky, a coalition of 27 area health, fitness and community organizations.
“We are in the launch phase of our organization and the website, but we already have a wealth of information available online to help people in our area to make better decisions on those things that directly affect their health and well-being,” Chuck Charles, Ashland mayor and vice president at Healthy Choices Kentucky member Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, said. “Our goal is to make healthychoiceskentucky.com a one-stop-shop for the community by providing the tools one would require to eat better, get moving and get involved in the community with those activities that can battle unhealthy weight.”
Healthy Choices Kentucky formed in late 2012 with a three-year project aimed at obesity. The group intends to halt the rise of the BMI (Body Mass Index) average of Boyd and Greenup counties. A person with a BMI of 30 or greater is considered obese. Boyd County has an obesity rate of 32.3 percent and Greenup has a rate of 31.9 percent.
