SOMERSET —  Boyd County eighth-grade students have until March 4 to apply for the Center for Rural Development’s 2013 Rogers Explorers summer youth leadership program

The program is for students interested in developing skills in math, science and technology this summer.

The program, conducted three days and two nights on a college campus, provides hands-on learning experiences and builds leadership skills, all while students get to see what it is like to live and study at a leading Kentucky college or university.

“Eighth-grade students in southern and eastern Kentucky have an exciting opportunity to participate in a summer camp that motivates students to excel in math, science and technology,” said Delaney Stephens, youth programs coordinator.

“By receiving hands-on instruction from college professors, students get to see how fun math and science can be when applied to the real world.”

The 2013 summer sessions of Rogers Explorers will June 2 through 4 at Lindsey Wilson College, June 5 through 7 at the University of the Cumberlands, July 21 through 23 at Eastern Kentucky University and July 24 through 26 at Morehead State University.

For more information, call (606) 677-6000 or visit http://centertech.com/leadership/rogers-explorers/ to download an application form. All applications must be completed and mailed to the Center for Rural Development, 2292 S. U.S. 27, Suite 300, Somerset, KY 42501.

Thirty students will be selected to attend each of the four sessions. Lodging, meals and program expenses (with the exception of transportation to and from the campus host site) are provided free.

Rogers Explorers is presented in partnership with the four colleges.

Since 2006, approximately 450 students have graduated from Rogers Explorers and have been encouraged to work toward building their future careers in southern and eastern Kentucky.
