Water was restored Friday to more than 400 Carter County residents who had been without service for a week.
The service outage occurred on Jan. 18. It was caused by debris jamming up under a bridge near Iron Hill and causing a line buried under Tygart Creek to separate, Grayson Utilities Superintendent Gerald Haney said.
Workers repaired the line the following morning, but by afternoon it had broken again, Haney said. Another repair was done on Sunday, but the line gave way yet again as the logjam continued to play havoc, Haney said.
A total of 443 customers were affected by the outage, according to Haney.
Haney said debris pileup was a problem, but the flow of the Tygart over the years has also contributed to the problem by causing the line to become exposed.
Fixing the line was a slow, arduous process, compounded by the difficulty of finding parts, Haney said. Repairs were completed and water began flowing again about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, he said. The utility company then began filling its storage tank about 11 a.m. Friday. Some had water Thursday night and Friday morning, but those in higher elevations were still waiting for their service to come back Friday afternoon, he said.
While repairs took longer than anticipated, they should be enough to prevent future problems with the line, Haney said. Where the line was lying on the bottom of the creek bed before, it’s now 10 feet below the surface of the water.
Grayson Utilities’ offices were besieged with phone calls during the outage, but “For the most part, people were understanding and cooperative,” Haney said.
Grayson Utilities provided bottled water to customers and also permitted them to fill receptacles at its offices on Ky. 7.
