A beautiful proposal

Raceland man surprises his girlfriend with ring, flowers

RUSSELL — Bellefonte Academy of Beauty was having a routine day until Tyler Gill of Raceland walked into the place on Thursday.

He brought a dozen roses to his girlfriend, Kayla Roberts, a 20-year-old student at the academy. After taking some ribbing from the other women there, Gill dropped to one knee in front of Roberts. The other women knew what was happening perhaps better than Roberts did. With great anticipation, they crowded around the station where the young couple were quietly talking and Gill pulled out a ring box and asked her to marry him.

Of course, she said “yes.”

The childhood sweethearts had dated seriously for the last year, even getting matching tattoos that read “All the way to the stars.” Then, Gill’s job as an electrician took him to New Mexico. But he recently decided he couldn’t be away from her any longer so he quit and came back home to Raceland.

When it came to proposing, he didn’t plan ahead.

“It was a spur-of-the-moment thing,” he said. “I was driving down the road and I just decided I’d do it.”

He said he didn’t know what kind of answer to expect. “I hoped she’d say ‘yes,’” he said.

Roberts said she was surprised by the proposal but didn’t hesitate in accepting.

She said they will likely wait six months to a year before having a small wedding so she can finish her course work at the academy and get established in a job.
