People who have relied upon Community Hospice gave it such high marks, the organization was recently recognized as a 2013 Hospice Honors recipient, a prestigious award recognizing hospice agencies which have provided the best patient care.
“This award feels really good because it is from the perspective of our families,” said Kyle Dyer, Community Hospice director of business development, who explained the award was based upon surveys which are sent to each family after a loved one passes. “It is based on the care and attention they received.”
Community Hospice marketing director Beth Taylor said she believes the recognition is the result of a highly dedicated staff.
“I think they’re just committed,” she said. “If they can help a patient and family through the most difficult part of life ... to have comfort and be treated with dignity, that’s very rewarding to them. We have lots of people who’ve been with us for more than 10 years and some who have been there for more than 20 years.”
Dyer added, “I have always said Hospice is a calling.”
Taylor and Dyer said there are still misunderstandings about Hospice resources and programs.
“A frequent remark we hear is ‘I wish we knew about you sooner.’ We get that a lot. And, I do wish more could take advantage of what we have to offer,” Dyer said, adding many think hospice is a specific place, even though most patients receive their hospice care at home. Hospice also has resources to take care of anyone who needs assistance, he noted.
“We take care of anybody — regardless,” he said, emphasizing local services are 100 percent funded.
Community Hospice’s Executive Director Susan Hunt also credited the organization’s success to dedicated staff members.
“We are thrilled to be recognized for high patient/family satisfaction,” she said. “We are a very mission-driven organization, and providing quality care to our patients and their families is our top priority.”
The annual award recognizes the top 100 agencies that continuously provide the highest level of satisfaction through their care as measured from the caregiver’s point of view. Deyta used the Family Evaluation of Hospice Care survey results from more than 1,200 partnering hospice agencies contained in its national FEHC database, with an evaluation period of January through December 2012. Deyta used five key drivers of caregiver satisfaction as the basis of the Hospice Honors calculation.
Community Hospice is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life of the terminally ill. The organization serves eastern Kentucky — Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Elliott, Lawrence, Martin and Johnson counties in Kentucky and Lawrence and Scioto counties in Ohio.
