Area residents will have the opportunity to help Safe Harbor of Northeast Kentucky during the annual Shop and Share Day on Feb. 1.
Shop and Share is a one-day drive to gather goods and necessities for domestic violence shelters across Kentucky, which supports victims and their children. Participating area groceries include the Ashland and Russell Kroger stores and Food City in Louisa. All items purchased at the Ashland, Russell and Louisa stores will go to Safe Harbor.
Shop and Share hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Volunteers at each store will provide a list of items needed at Safe Harbor. This year’s list includes shampoo, deodorant, tampons/feminine napkins, disposable razors, diapers (sizes 3, 4 and 5), baby wipes, toilet paper, cleaning products, canned soups, canned vegetables, coffee, peanut butter, laundry and/or dish detergent, Clorox wipes, SOS pads and bleach.
Assisting with the day’s activities in Ashland, Russell and Louisa will be members of area Girl Scout troops and Drug Court participants from Boyd, Greenup and Lawrence counties.
Organizational partners for the 2014 Shop and Share Day include first lady Jane Beshear, Kentucky Domestic Violence Association, Kroger, Food City, Kentucky Commission on Women, the Kentucky Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and the Girl Scouts of Kentucky’s Wilderness Road Council.
“Last year, Safe Harbor housed more than 500 women and children,” said Ann Perkins, executive director of Safe Harbor. “On a daily basis, we average more than 65 to 75 women and children every day. We provide three meals a day, snacks, diapers and all the supplies that a family needs to live. This figure doesn’t include the more than 75 who live at Harbor Hill.
“Most of us who are shoppers know how much it takes to feed, clothe and take care of our own families. Imagine doing that for more than 30 families every single day. It is mind-boggling to imagine.”
Perkins said Shop and Share is particularly important now that state and federal grants have become more difficult to secure.
