Honoring veterans

Events scheduled to observe holiday

SUMMIT — America’s veterans, as well as those who sacrificed their lives for the nation, will be honored and remembered with numerous events and observations throughout the Ashland area today.

Starting at 11 a.m., crowds will gather at the Boyd County War Memorial at Armco Park along U.S. 60 for the annual Veterans Day observance hosted by members of the Cannonsburg Optimists Club.

“All of the schools will be represented. We have several speakers and the Boyd County band will be there playing patriotic songs and that barbershop quartet will be singing,” said Eulas Hayes, president of the Cannonsburg Optimists Club, who noted a pair of new granite benches were scheduled to be installed before the holiday weekend.

Guest speakers will include superintendents of each of the four local school systems: Brock Walter, Steve Gilmore, Bill Musick and Jerry Foster; along with Matt Potter, president of the Eastern Kentucky Military Historical Society; State Rep. Rocky Adkins and Ernie Steele. Historian and cannon-maker Marshall Steen will also provide a presentation about the American Civil War.

If possible, the ceremony will also include a musical presentation by vocalist John Stevens, Hayes said.

“We have a pretty good crowd every year,” said Hayes, who noted the club has been in charge of the annual Veterans Day observance for the past seven to eight years.

Community Hospice will also honor area veterans with a ceremony at 11 a.m. The ceremony  will be at the Community Hospice Care Center at 2330 Pollard Road.

The ceremony is planned as an outdoor event, but will be moved indoors in case of inclement weather.  A reception inside the care center will follow the ceremony. The ceremony will feature comments from Gilda Hall, executive director of the office of Kentucky Veterans Centers, and will also include music from the Russell High School concert band.

“Through its work providing end-of-life care, Community Hospice assists many veterans and their families,” said Susan Hunt, executive director of Community Hospice. “This Veterans Day ceremony is just one way Community Hospice and its staff can recognize the commitment and sacrifice veterans have made for us and for our country.  We are pleased to have this opportunity to honor all area veterans.”

Numerous local restaurants, including Golden Corral, Callihan’s American Pub & Grill, Applebee’s and Texas Roadhouse are offering free meals or appetizers for veterans today. Kyova 10 Theater is also providing free movie passes to those who have served in the military.
