RUSSELL — Carl Taylor is planning a community volunteer “Messiah” Sing on Dec. 8 at Ashland Plaza Church of the Nazarene.

It would be the first “Messiah” Sing in 15 years, Taylor said. “I spoke with Max Jackson and he said it hadn’t been done since 1998.”

Taylor, the choral director at Boyd County High School, will partner with the choral departments at Ashland Paul Blazer and Russell high schools. The sponsoring choirs will be in charge of refreshments after the 3 p.m. performance. They will also have buckets available for donations. The three choirs will take 40 students to perform at Carnegie Hall in March.

The “Messiah” Sing choir will rehearse at 2 p.m. the day of the event. Orchestra accompaniment will be by area musicians. Dan Boyer of Blazer is gathering the strings and John Johnson of Boyd County the brass and percussion.

Taylor said he’d like to have 100 singers for the nine or 10 selections that will be sung.

“My pastor (Kevin Campbell) and I were talking about a month or two ago that we needed to do something big and splashy at Christmastime,” Taylor said. “I told him I always wanted to do the ‘Messiah,’ and he said, ‘Why don’t you go for it?’ So that’s what I’m doing.”

The five choruses from the Christmas portion of the “Messiah,” as well as the “Hallelujah” chorus, plus selected arias and recitatives are part of the program, Taylor said. There five solos and a duet.

“It’s for anybody who wants to come and sing,” he said.

Taylor is encouraging singers to bring their own music and dress in tuxes, black dresses or holiday attire. The performance will be in the church’s Family Life Center, which seats about 500, Taylor said.
