Coats are for all who need them

ASHLAND — The Joe Stevens Memorial Coat Drive will begin at 9 a.m. today in Central Park as part of services conducted by Church Without Walls, with the assistance of several additional organizations. More than 2,000 coats collected by King’s Daughters Medical Center employees will be available.

Volunteer Rita Burgess said organizers have received several inquiries about restrictions or eligibility requirements to receive the winter apparel.

“Everyone is welcome, regardless of where they live,” Burgess said, adding residents of neighboring counties and states are more than welcome to share in the blessings of the community project.

The coat drive and distribution is a memorial to the late Joe Stevens, a KDMC emergency room staff member whose kind acts included giving a coat worn by his own recently departed father to a homeless patient.
