Those who enjoy biking, kayaking and hiking might enjoy the race series coming to Greenbo Lake State Resort Park this summer.
The Unbridled Adventure is a series of three adventure races organized by Flying Squirrel Adventures in partnership with Kentucky State Parks. The second race in the series will be at Greenbo on Aug. 17.
The races include mountain biking, trekking and paddling.
“The sport is growing in popularity. People bring their mountain bikes and kayaks and all their gear,” said Diane Bonfert, director of recreation and interpretation for Kentucky State Parks. “There are check points and they have to use a topo map to navigate to them.”
The races will grow longer and more difficult, in terms of both mental and physical challenge, as the season progresses. The first in the series will be a 6-hour race at Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park on June 1. Racers will be allowed 8 hours to complete the race at Greenbo, and third will be a 12-hour race at Natural Bridge State Resort Park, which is also a qualifier for nationals, Bonfert said.
Anyone, even beginners, can enjoy adventure races, Bonfert said.
“They’re for anybody. We’ve had teenagers do it with parents. We’ve had a gentleman in his 70s or 80s. You have to have a level of fitness, but it’s good for beginners, too, to help get their fitness up. ... This is a good group of people. They’re very supportive of each other,” she said. “If you’re interested but don’t think you’re ready yet, you’re welcome to come and watch. We always need volunteers, and it’s a lot of fun.”
Racers will be judged by the time it takes them to complete the race and by how many check points they stop at. Some check points will be optional while others will be mandatory, she said. Each race entry includes a wicking race shirt, post-race meal, waterproof maps, event insurance with medical coverage, course vetting, Tyvek control cards and race bibs, door prizes and awards.
There will be a free navigation clinic on Friday evening before the first two races in the series and an awards banquet Saturday night after each race. Top finishers in the series will be awarded cash prizes.
