Calvary to host prayer breakfast
ASHLAND - Calvary Episcopal Church, 1337 Winchester Ave., will continue a tradition that dates more than a decade Tuesday when it hosts the December Community Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in the church’s fellowship hall.
Since its creation 17 years ago, the prayer breakfasts — on the second Tuesday of each month — have been hosted by a different church each month. However, Calvary has hosted the December breakfasts almost from the beginning.
The breakfasts begin with a meal served by the host church, followed by a devotion and music led by the host church, and then a time of prayer at individual tables. The breakfasts are usually over before 9 a.m.
There is no charge for the breakfast, and reservations are not required. An offering is taken, with proceeds going to Ashland Community Kitchen, which moved from Calvary Episcopal to its new home in The Neighborhood less than two years ago. The agency serves free lunches Monday through Friday and evening meals on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Grants available in Portsmouth
PORTSMOUTH - Main Street Portsmouth, in partnership with the City of Portsmouth, will award $25,000 in grants through the Main Street Portsmouth Building Improvement Grant Program.
The program was initiated when Main Street was awarded a $25,000 grant from Heritage Ohio and the Ohio Department of Development. The goal of the program is to promote improvements to commercial properties in the Main Street district. Main Street has continued the program with support from the city, which allocated funds for historic preservation from the Capitol Improvement Budget.
The program allows owners of commercial properties within the Main Street district to apply for matching grant funds for eligible improvements visible from a public right of way. The grants are in recognition of the positive impact that individual building renovations can have on the overall appearance and quality of their storefronts.
This year’s selection committee members are Wayne Allen, immediate past president of Main Street; Kevin Johnson, 1st Ward councilman; Larry Justice, city engineer; Scott Moore, Main Street vice president; and Ann Sydnor, Main Street board member.
Applications are available at the Main Street Portsmouth Office at 342 Second St., at mspohio.org, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling (740) 464-0203. Applications, fees and supporting documentation must be received by Jan. 25. Awards will be announced no later than Feb. 8.
