Authors on hand for JSF open house

Writers to sign and discuss their efforts at annual Christmas event Friday

ASHLAND — Area authors whose works chronicle various aspects of Appalachian life will be on hand Friday evening to sign books and discuss their efforts as part of the annual Jesse Stuart Foundation Christmas Open House.

Writers Stacy Nelson, G. Sam Piatt, Mark Maynard, Jim Gifford, Robin Ramey “and possibly Edwina Pendarvis,” will be part of the annual JSF celebration in downtown Ashland from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with the city’s First Friday events, according to Gifford, CEO and senior editor.

Nelson will be promoting his new book “Beneath the Weeping Skies,” which Gifford described as a post Civil War story based in eastern Kentucky. Gifford himself will be there to sign copies of his latest Jesse Stuart biography “An Extraordinary Life.” Maynard will be discussing his latest book, “Tragedy And Triumph,” and taking orders for the novel which details experiences by members of the 1967 Ashland Tomcats football team. The book will be available in about 10 days.

Piatt will be signing copies of his book, “Men of Valor,” which shares combat stories of soldiers from southern Ohio and eastern Kentucky. Ramey will be on hand with copies of her book “Butternut Moon,” an Appalachian-based children’s novel which Gifford said would be an excellent choice for young and teenage readers. Pendarvis will be available with copies of her book “Raft Tide and Railroad,” featuring memories of an Appalachian family and their seventh son.
