ASHLAND — Area residents are being urged to Take it to Heart Saturday at a celebration of heart month sponsored by King’s Daughters Medical Center and the Kentucky Heart Institute.

The event includes free screenings for heart health, a brown-bag medicine check with KDMC pharmacists, a screening for varicose veins, information about heart failure treatment and management, tours of the cardiac catheterization labs at KDMC, refreshments and giveaway items.

The open house will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Kentucky Heart Institute offices on the second floor of Medical Plaza B, 613 23rd St.

The Healthy Heart screening includes checks of blood sugar, total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood oxygen and a screening EKG. Cardiologists Terence Ross, M.D., and Tina Sias, M.D., will review results with participants at the event.

The varicose vein screening consists of a paper-and-pencil review of symptoms and an examination of the affected area(s) by vascular/endovascular surgeon Al Addasi, M.D.

Appointments for the screenings are requested and may be made by calling (888) 377-KDMC. A limited number of walk-in appointments will be available.

KDMC’s pharmacy will offer one-on-one reviews of medicines, including generic equivalents, side effects, interactions and related topics. Those who wish to participate in the review should bring a complete list of medications they take, including over-the-counter medications and supplements, dosages and frequency. Appointments are not required.
