Student's sock drive successful

ASHLAND — Megan Downey is helping keep the area cozy this season.

The Paul G. Blazer High School junior wanted to start a community service project and approached Lucy Davis, executive director of The Dressing Room, to learn what the agency needs most. Her parents, Tony and Melissa Downey, are active volunteers there. The agency provides clothing to needy families and individuals in the Tri-State.

Davis told her the need for socks is great. Together, they came up with a fun project to involved young children in.

Downey made a presentation to the Ashland school board, which OK’d her project asking elementary school students to donate socks; the classroom donating the most pairs of socks at each school won a pizza party.

The project collected about 1,325 pairs of socks for The Dressing Room.

Downey and Davis worked on the project since November and Downey presented her donation this week.
