Greenup Old Fashion days

Catch it if you can

Staff report

GREENUP — The 41st annual Greenup Old Fashion Days takes place Thursday through Sunday with plenty of excitement, eats and entertainment.

Festivities begin at 9 a.m. Thursday with the opening ceremony, kicking off four full days of activities mostly on Main Street in Greenup.

Kenny Imel is the grand marshal for Saturday’s Old Fashion Parade at 4:30 p.m. The Greenup County native not only works with Old Fashion Days but several other organizations including president of the county Farm Bureau, a member of the GOTEM Tractor Club, an Eagle Scout who has been active in Future Farmers of America and the Three Mile Christian Baptist Church youth leader, treasurer and Sunday School teacher.

Old Fashion Days will also honor the memory of J.T. Lawson, who died in April. He was a third-generation owner and manager of Lawson Hardware Store in Greenup and an active community and civic leader.

Lawson served 16 years as a Greenup city councilman and one term as mayor during the 1950s. He helped start Old Fashion Days in 1964 along with Estle Bailey, Lillian Applegate and Harold Miller, among others. He was the Old Fashion Days Parade grand marshal in 1987.

Entertainment for Old Fashion Days includes the Gospel Tide, the Singing Cookes and Kentucky Christian University’s choir on Thursday; Morehead State’s Jazz Quintent and Nashville recording artist Dwain Messer, who is from Olive Hill, on Friday.

Old Fashion Days will have an auction at 6 p.m. Thursday with proceeds benefiting next year’s festival. One basket is valued at $600.

Several old favorites are returning and there will be some new wrinkles as well.

— The Rock Wall is returning and there will be inflatables, a mechanical bull and a NASCAR Simulator.

— The Raceland Middle School football team will have a dunking booth.

— The Greenup County Firefighters Association will present the inaugural Greenup County Fireman’s Olympics. Local departments will compete in the turn-out gear relay, hose roll competition, ladder and bucket race and an obstacle course.

— The Greenup County Emergency Responders will be on hand Saturday with anyone who has questions or to learn more about what the responders do.

— A Kentucky State Police mobile drug unit will be on display all four days.
