CATLETTSBURG — Catlettsburg Refining, LLC received a 2012 Manufacturer of the Year Award last week, to the pleasant surprise of its employees.

When seven employees from the refinery, part of the Marathon Petroleum Company’s six-refinery system, attended the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers awards banquet Friday, they were unaware they would be receiving an award.

“It was a complete surprise. They elected this year to not notify anyone beforehand,” said Sheila Fraley, community relations representative at the refinery.

To win the award, the refinery had to meet three criteria — innovation, corporate citizenship and advocacy.

Fraley said she thinks one of the main reasons the refinery was awarded is because of the career fair the diversity team hosts every year.

“It (the career fair) is a great event that brings together employees, and we had almost 3,000 students this year. … It shows students early on, before they pick careers, the kinds of jobs that we have in the community,” she said.

She said the refinery also meets the corporate citizenship criteria by sharing in the success of its surrounding towns and communities.

“We have some employees on over 50 boards in our area. We’re sustaining strength in our community. Employees get involved in the Paramount Arts center, Summer Motion, Winter Wonderland of Lights,” Fraley said.

She also cited the refinery’s safety and environmental excellence as a reason it was awarded.

She said the refinery’s staff was excited and honored to receive the award.

“There are a lot of excellent facilities in the state. To be singled out like that and given an award is an honor. I really think it’s because of all our dedicated employees. … This is an award we can share with everyone,” she said.

A total of three manufacturer of the year awards were given out this year, one in each of three categories — small business, mid-size business and large business. The Catlettsburg refinery received the award for the large business category.
