Benefit concert will aid scholarship

IRONTON - Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society, will have a benefit concert to raise funds for a new scholarship that will be offered to Ohio University Southern students majoring in education.

The benefit will be Saturday in the Mains Rotunda, Riffe Center. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Admission is $5 a person. By bringing a can of food for the Louisville food bank, each attendee will get $1 off admission.

Chris Cecil, president of Kappa Delta Pi, will discuss the scholarship and the program at 6:30 p.m.

Katie Owens and Leatherwood will perform from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Costume judging will take place following the concert; the winner will be announced at 9 p.m. Costume contest registration will be at 6 p.m. The cost is $2 per contestant.

Ghost Stories in the Cave set

OLIVE HILL - The annual Ghost Stories in the Cave program will be at 8:30 p.m. Saturday in Cascade Cave at Carter Caves State Resort Park.

Admission is $2. Attendees should bring their own seating.

Republican club meeting changed

SUMMIT - The meeting date of the Boyd County Republican Women’s Club has been changed to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 9.

The meeting will still be at JJ Restaurant, with the business session at 6:30 p.m. Guests and new members are welcome.



Sunshine UMC bazaar Saturday

SOUTH SHORE - Sunshine United Methodist Church will have a fall bazaar from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

There will be crafts, holiday items, paintings, baked goods, housewares and eat-in or carry-out lunch.

On the menu are chili, vegetable, bean or potato soup, a sandwich, dessert and beverage for $5 for adults and $2.50 for children. For more information, call the church at (606) 932-9296.



Grief workshop set in Huntington

HUNTINGTON - Hospice of Huntington will offer a Loss of a Child Grief Support Group at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the downtown office, 1101 Sixth Ave.

The free, professionally facilitated session will allow families dealing with the death of a child to explore and discuss grief issues.

Haunted maze ends tonight

GRAYSON - Small children and those who are faint of heart are warned to stay away from tonight’s final opportunity to navigate the Carter County Corn Maze.

Organizers say the elaborate maze will be filled with things that are “scary, freaky or horrifying.” No flashlights will be allowed,

The maze at the Carter County Fairgrounds on U.S. 60 west of Grayson will be open for the last time this year from 6 to 11 p.m., with tours starting as darkness falls. Tickets are $7.50 a person.

Carter County receives road aid

FRANKFORT -The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced today the Carter County Fiscal Court will receive $64,900 in emergency county road aid funds to replace a bridge on Grassy Fork Road.

The project ensures the bridge, a deteriorated low-water crossing just off the A-A Highway, will more safely serve local residents and businesses in Carter County.

The fiscal court is responsible for administering the work.



Charitable gaming Web site launched

ASHLAND - The Coalition for Charitable Gaming has launched a Web site to provide information and updates about the fight against the state's proposed takeover of charitable gaming in Kentucky.

The site is at www.ccgky.org. It includes information about the state's proposed takeover plan and how the organization is joining with charitable gaming operators around the state to fight the plan.

The coalition is a broad coalition of interested parties that seek to protect, preserve and grow the charitable gaming industry.



OLBH Auxiliary awards projects

RUSSEL - The Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital Auxiliary presented hospital officials with a donation of $34,821 at its annual Auxiliary Tea on Tuesday.

The auxiliary operates the hospital gift shop and conducts various fundraising activities throughout the year to benefit the community and the patients of OLBH. At the tea, the auxiliary presented proceeds from the group's annual golf benefit to two hospital causes.

A contribution of $17,410.50 was donated to the hospital’s Meals on Wheels program and $17,410.50 was designated to the OLBH Foundation's Jonathan A. Ferguson fund.

The Ferguson fund finances purchase of equipment and benevolent health care assistance for programs and patients, including pediatrics and oncology, and supports the annual OLBH children’s Christmas party.
