ACTC will trade prints for alumni info

By MIKE JAMES - The Independent

ASHLAND What to do with a stack of identical landscape prints — that was the question when about 500 copies of a watercolor view of Ashland Community and Technical College came to light recently.

ACTC officials found several hundred of the prints earlier this spring and knew they were too attractive — and significant to the college — to dispose of lightly.

But one was all the college needed for its archives, leaving around 500. So dean of institutional advancement Louise Shytle scarfed them up to use as bait for an initiative to develop an alumni database.

The deal is, ACTC will give one of the prints to alumni in exchange for some information for the database. What they’re looking for mainly is to know who went to ACTC, or its predecessor, Ashland Community College, and how to get in touch.

The 16- by 24-inch prints on heavy glossy stock depict a spring scene outside the front facade of ACTC, with the main entrance a focal point. The view shows trees and foliage at the height of their pastel spring color.

The painter is Sandy Perrine of Greenup, a noted local artist. She painted it for an anniversary celebration of what was then ACC during the transition from the University of Kentucky system to the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, said Angeline Godwin (then Angeline Dvorak), who was president of the college at the time.

In fact, the view intentionally — and prominently — shows the “Ashland Community College” lettering over the main entrance, said Godwin. At the time it was uncertain just what the institution would be called after the transition and those who knew and loved ACC wanted something to remember it by, said Godwin, president of the Area Development Partnership, a three-county chamber of commerce and economic development body in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Some of the limited-edition prints were presented to major contributors and a few were sold, she said.

Interested alumni may call the advancement office at (606) 326-2077.
