FCI escape leads to 5 indictments

Kenneth Hart/The Independent

Ashland Four inmates of the Federal Correctional Institution at Summit have been indicted for escaping from the facility, and a fifth defendant has been charged with helping them do so.

Reco Donel Mitchener, Donald Brown, Tary Holcomb and Justin Latief Floyd all were arraigned Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Ashland on escape charges.

Kyesha Crockwell is scheduled to be arraigned on Monday for allegedly aiding in the escape, which took place either the night of July 26 or during the early-morning hours of July 27, according to court records.

All five defendants were indicted Aug. 21 by a federal grand jury sitting in Ashland.

Details of the escape were not immediately available. It also was not immediately known what crimes the four inmates were serving time for. The indictment states only that all four had been “lawfully confined” to FCI by virtue of criminal convictions in federal court.

Each of the four could have up to five years tacked onto their sentences if they are convicted of escape. The charge also carries a possible fine of up $250,000, plus three years of supervised released.

Crockwell also could be sentenced to up to five years and fined up to $250,000 if she is convicted.

A grand jury indictment is a formal accusation of a crime and does not establish guilt.
