Woman killed in Elliott accident
SANDY HOOK - A 74-year-old Sandy Hook woman was killed Thursday night in a single-vehicle accident in Elliott County that also injured another woman.
Kentucky State Police said Charletta M. Monfort was killed when her vehicle left the roadway and struck an embankment at the intersection of Ky. 7 and 557.
Monfort was flown to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington where she was pronounced dead. A passenger in her vehicle, Norma Monfort, 70, of Sandy Hook, was also transported by ambulance to St. Mary’s for nonlife-threatening injuries.
The accident remains under investigation by Trooper William Babbard.
State police have holiday strategy
FRANKFORT - State police have stepped up traffic enforcement during the Labor Day holiday, which began Friday night and continues through midnight Monday.
Troopers are aggressively enforcing speed limits and seat belt laws, issuing citations to speeders and motorists not wearing safety belts. No warnings will be issued.
Police have a zero tolerance policy for alcohol- or drug-impaired driving. The legal limit is .08 percent but drivers younger than 21 or operating commercial vehicles can be arrested for lower levels.
Fire damages Flatwoods home
FLATWOODS - The Flatwoods Volunteer Fire Department quickly extinguished a fire at an empty residence Thursday night.
Lt. Keith Kitchen said the fire started in the kitchen at 1129 Crestwood Court, where it was contained. The home was heavily smoke damaged, but fire damage was confined to the kitchen area where there was also a little water damage, he said. The fire was called in to authorities shortly before 8 p.m.
Kitchen said the cause has not been determined and remains under investigation.
The Wurtland and Russell departments assisted at the scene.
Woman arrested for trafficking
LUCASVILLE - The Ohio State Highway Patrol arrested a Columbus woman Thursday night for trafficking drugs when more than $77,000 worth of cocaine was discovered during a traffic stop in Scioto County.
Police said Yolanda N. Johnson, 39, was stopped for a traffic violation on U.S. 23 just south of Lucasville when a search of her vehicle revealed 775 grams of powder cocaine in the bottom of her purse. Police say the drugs have a street value of $77,500.
Johnson was scheduled to appear in Portsmouth Municipal Court Friday morning.
Ashlander charged in theft of tools
CATLETTSBURG - Boyd County sheriff’s deputies have charged an Ashland man in the theft of about $34,000 worth of tools, according to a sheriff’s department press release.
David Kevin Chinn of the 3200 block of South 29th Street has been charged with third-degree burglary, according to the release.
Deputies arrested Chinn at his residence Friday and recovered the tools, which had been reported stolen from Meta Tec on South Big Run Road.
Other arrests are pending.
Bloodmobile to be at fire station
ASHLAND - The Boyd County Chapter of the American Red Cross will have its Community Bloodmobile at the Central Fire Station, 1021 Carter Ave., from 10:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
Donors must weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the past 56 days.
No appointment is needed. Potential first-time donors are asked to bring two forms of identification, one with a photograph. Repeat donors are asked to bring their Red Cross cards or driver’s license.
Labor Day events scheduled in park
ASHLAND - The city will have Labor Day events in Central Park at 6 p.m. Monday.
There will be a free ice cream social at the bandstand and door prizes.
Mayor Pro-Tem Kevin Gunderson will give a welcome address followed by music by Stephen Salyers with Larry Deerfield; Gary Higginbotham; Fred Leone; Tom Stephens and Bob Shortridge; and ETA.
Attendees are asked to bring their own seating.
OLBH will offer extra MRI hours
RUSSELL - Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital’s Imaging Center will extend its hours for MRI services until 9 p.m. beginning Sept. 15 to better accommodate patients who prefer evening appointments.
The center is on the ground floor of Bellefonte Centre, 1000 Ashland Drive.

UK offers senior enrichment hours
MOREHEAD - Area residents 50 and older can take educational and enrichment classes in Morehead this spring, through a program offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kentucky.
A registration open house will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the Rowan County Health Center, 730 W. Main St.

Homework Help set at Boyd library
ASHLAND - A free tutoring service for local students returns to the Boyd County Public Library this school year.
The Homework Help program, now in its fifth year, is offered at both the main and Summit branches on Wednesdays that local schools are in session. The first one is Wednesday.
This year, the library is offering the service with assistance from the College Cadet Class at Boyd County High School. Library staff will be available to answer questions.
The locations and times are:
‰Summit branch, 1016 Summit Road (across from Boyd County Middle School), from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
‰Main branch, 1740 Central Ave., from 4 to 6 p.m.
All ages can get help. The tutors will not do homework or projects for the students, but rather will help them figure out how to do it themselves.

RACELAND - City offices will be closed Monday in observance of Labor Day.
Vendors sought for festival
HUNTINGTON - Area artisans and crafters who want to participate as vendors at the fourth-annual Holly Berry Festival at Marshall University have until Sept. 30 to register.
The festival, sponsored by Marshall Library Associates, will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 22 in the Memorial Student Center lobby.
Admission and parking are free and festivalgoers will get free snacks. Books will be for sale.
Dr. Lynne Welch, chairwoman of the festival planning committee, 10 percent of the sales at the festival will be donated to the Library Associates endowment fund. The fund supports development of the Marshall University Libraries book collections.

CASA penny drive starts Tuesday
ASHLAND - CASA of Northeast Kentucky’s annual Pennies from Heaven drive will start Tuesday in Boyd County.
The annual fundraiser provides money for child advocacy services for children in the county foster care system.
Local schools get involved by recruiting students to bring in donations during September. Besides helping fund the program, participating students learn about child abuse and neglect.
The class at each school with the most donations at the end of the month wins a class pizza party.

Beshear appoints Flatwoods woman
FRANKFORT - Gov. Steve Beshear has appointed Kimberly B. Tice of Flatwoods to the Kentucky Board of Licensure for Nursing Home Administrators. Tice is an administrator at Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.
She represents the Kentucky Association of Health Care Facilities. Her term expires Jan 12, 2012.
