Morehead food market robbed

MOREHEAD - Kentucky State Police are looking for a man who robbed a food market near Morehead on Sunday night.

A man walked into the Cave Run Lake Mart on Ky. 801 about 10:45 p.m. Sunday and demanded cash, according to troopers.

Store employees complied with demands, and the suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

The robber was described as white, wearing a dark colored mask and black hat, a dark-colored sweatshirt, blue jeans and dark colored boots. It is not known if the man was armed.

No one was injured.

Planning hearings set at Fairview

WESTWOOD - The Fairview Local Planning Committee will have a public forum and meeting Sept. 4.

The hearing, to solicit public comment on the district facilities plan, will take place at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the meeting of the committee at 7 p.m.

Both will be in the Fairview High School library.

30 scholarships available at OUS

IRONTON - Ohio University Southern has 30 scholarships available during the fall quarter for incoming freshmen who meet the eligibility requirements.

For the Freshman Academic Merit Scholarship, students must be full-time with 16 hours per quarter. One half of tuition will be waived for the first year and may be renewable for three additional years. Must have 23 ACT and be in top 20 percent of graduating class.

The Freshman Leadership Grant is awarded to full-time students with 21 ACT and 3.0 GPA and a letter of recommendation from principal or guidance counselor and demonstrate leadership activities. A $1,000 waiver of tuition will be for the first year and may be renewable for three additional years.

Scholarships are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Kentucky residents in Boyd, Greenup, Carter, Lewis, Elliott, Fleming, Lawrence, Rowan and Mason counties pay in-state tuition. Fall quarter begins Sept. 8.

Senior Center tries to help military

ASHLAND - The Ashland Senior Center is accepting donations of gum, hard candy, nuts and other staple snacks, as well as cash donations, for gifts to military personnel.

Center director Kim Rice said boxes will be mailed in time to reach recipients by Christmas. To donate cash to cover shipping, checks may be made to Ashland Senior Center, Rice said.

The center is at 324 15th St.

Whitley fan Hill to accept donations

SANDY HOOK - Keith Whitley fan Bonnie Hill will be at the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center on Wednesday to accept a donation of two of the late country artist’s jackets.

Hill, known for her campaign to have Whitley added to the Country Music Hall of Fame, will meet with Highlands director Debbie Miller at 11 a.m. to accept the jackets, which will go on display at the Laurel Gorge Heritage Center in Sandy Hook on Saturday as part of the annual Keith Whitley Memorial exhibit. The exhibit will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
