Building on six successful years of sales, this year’s Route 60 Yard Sale in Carter County will be expanded to two days.
“The idea is to get people off the Interstate and come down through the small towns,” said volunteer Jill York. “It’s just a wonderful opportunity for people to see our little corner of the world. U.S. 60 goes about 40 miles across Carter County through Grayson, Olive Hill and all of the smaller settlements.”
The 2008 Route 60 Yard Sale will be Aug. 1 through 2. The City of Grayson Tourism and Convention Commission anticipates local residents will offer an array of items including furniture, glassware, clothing, toys, produce, kitchen items, antiques, crafts, tools, food and drinks.
Anyone who wants to cook food for their yard sale location will be required to have a temporary food service permit from the Little Sandy Health Department. The $25 fee for foods including baked goods, hot dogs, hamburgers and corn dogs does not apply to non-profit groups such as Relay For Life, Little League or church groups, although a permit is still required.
No permit is necessary for sealed food items such as chips, candy bars, water or soda.
York said safety is a priority for the two-day event and asks everyone who will be participating to be sure they have the property owner’s permission before setting up and there is enough space for people to park their vehicles and safely walk around the sales area. The Carter County Tourism and Convention Commission does not assume liability for any injuries or damage.
“We ask everyone to be very cautious while driving along Rt. 60 because traffic will be slowed and people will be out on foot,” York said.
Anyone who wants to participate in the sale but does not have a space along Rt. 60 is reminded there will be free spaces available at the old Carter County Fairgrounds on U.S. 60 East. Vendors need to be sure to take everything needed and clean up before leaving. For more information about the annual Route 60 Yard Sale, call (606) 474-7263.
