Guns-for-drugs scheme leaves 3 men indicted

GREENUP — A Greenup County grand jury has indicted three men in connection with an alleged scheme to trade stolen guns for drugs.

Jerry R. Callihan II, 21, of Argillite, was charged with two counts each of felony theft and conspiracy to first-degree trafficking in a controlled substance. His alleged co-conspirators, Dennis Michael Hieneman, 30, and Clayton I. Reed II, 23, both of Greenup, both were charged with two counts of felony receiving stolen property and two counts of first-degree trafficking.

The trafficking charges are Class B felonies, each carrying a 10- to 20-year prison sentence. The theft and receiving stolen property charges are Class D felonies that carry sentences of one to five years.

According to the indictments, Callihan allegedly entered the homes of his father, Jerry Callihan Sr., and another man, James Griffith, and stole multiple firearms from each. He then allegedly traded the weapons to Hieneman and Reed for narcotics.

The alleged crimes occurred between Dec. 1 and Jan. 3.

In an unrelated case, the grand jury indicted a Flatwoods man for allegedly bringing drugs into a day care center on March 26.

Grand jurors alleged that the actions of Anthony W. Watkins, 37, of Flatwoods, “created a substantial danger of death or serious physical injury” to any one or more of the 37 children who were present in the facility, which was not identified.

Watkins also was charged with one count each of felony drug paraphernalia possession, third-degree drug possession, a misdemeanor; and second-degree persistent felony offender.

In another case, a Russell woman was indicted on two felony counts for allegedly selling drugs to a child.

Lois Roark, 29, of Russell, was charged with one count of selling or transferring a controlled substance to a minor and one count of first-degree wanton endangerment.

The former charge is a Class C felony and the latter a Class D felony, meaning Roark could get up to 15 years in prison if she is convicted. The alleged offense occurred on May 21.

A grand jury indictment is a formal accusation of a crime and does not establish guilt.

Others named in true bills handed up recently by the grand jury were:

—Brent E. Deer, 38, of Flatwoods, charged with four counts of criminal possession of a forged prescription, and Tara Deer, 30, of Flatwoods, charged with four counts of prescription forgery.

—Brian L. Gilliam, 32, and Amanda G. Bolander, 29, both of South Shore, each charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking.

—Kelsey R. Glancy, 21, Brittany D. Wells, 22, and Tiffany F. Devore, 21, all of Flatwoods; and Deerika L. Lewis, 20, of Ashland; each charged with one count of fraudulent use of a credit card.

—Orville Eugene Miller, 21, of Flatwoods, charged with one count of third-degree rape and one count of third-degree sodomy.

—Brandi Lynn Payne, 29, of Ashland, charged with one count of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument, one count of receiving stolen property, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia and one count of first-degree persistent felony offender.

—Jeffrey S. Gedeon, 33, of Ashland, charged with one count of first-degree bail-jumping.

—Vivian D. Gamble, 22, and Grady E. Smith Jr., 38, both of Kitts Hill, Ohio, each charged with four counts of criminal conspiracy to possess forged prescriptions, one count of first-degree possession of a controlled substance and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Smith also was charged with second-degree persistent felony offender.

—Ruth A. Bentley, 33, and James M. Newland, 31, both of Ashland, each charged with three counts of theft by deception over $300.

—Aaron L. Salyers, 23, of Flatwoods, charged with one count of trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 yards of a school, one count of possession of drug paraphernalia, one count of second-degree escape and one count of second-offense driving under the influence.

—Heather Renee Monk, 29, of Ashland, charged with one count of second-degree forgery and one count of receiving stolen property.

—Darrell E. Howard, 45, of Greenup, charged with one count of fourth-offense driving under the influence, one count of second-offense driving on a DUI-suspended license, one count of leaving the scene of an accident and one count of no insurance.

—Billy E. Litton, 28, of Ironton, charged with one count of criminal conspiracy to traffic in marijuana and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

—Jeffrey A. Horn, 31, of Greenup, charged with one count of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, one count of driving under the influence, one count of failure to wear a seat belt and one count of improper turning.
