Race Days set this weekend

Raceland The sound of hoofs may no longer be heard, but the revving of engines will be unmistakable as the Race Days Riding Lawn Mower Race gets under way during Raceland Race Days, set for Friday and Saturday at Raceland City Park.

Activities this year include free inflatables, a silent auction, arts and crafts, food, a dog show, a pet show, a police car, fire truck and ambulance show, entertainment and exhibits.

Friday

Entertainment will begin at noon on the stage in the park with the Raceland-Worthington High School cheerleaders performing a dance routine. At 2 p.m., Previous Engagement will perform. At 4 p.m., Sierra Tango will be on stage, and at 5 p.m., the Asphalt Angels Car Club Cruise-In will begin.

The cruise-in has a $5 registration fee, and those attending have a chance to win door prizes and a 50/50 drawing, which will be at 5 p.m. There will be police cars, fire trucks and ambulances on exhibit on Chinn Street in front of the park.

For more information about the cruise-in, call the Asphalt Angels Car Club at (606) 388-3118.

The gospel sing will start at 6 p.m. featuring Joe and Patty Fisher, the Melvin Family, David Mize, the Chinns Branch Singers, Wade Coffey and John Stevens.

At 8 p.m., Young Blood, a group of boys ages 10 to 15, will perform. The group, which recently finished a gig at Tootie’s in Nashville, also has taped a segment of “Nashville Star.” The group performs classic and Southern rock and country music.

Saturday

The day will begin with a dog show in the park. There is a $5 registration fee, which will go to The Greenup County Humane Society.

Entry forms may be picked up at the Raceland City Building or one may register the day of the show. A trophy will be awarded to first place, with ribbons awarded to other winners.

A pet show will follow, which also has a $5 registration fee. A trophy will be awarded to the first-place winner and for the most unusual pet.

At noon, there will be a water battle involving local fire departments. Beginning at 1 p.m., bluegrass music will fill the air with Willy and Billy, and at 2 p.m. Poaceous will take the stage.

At 3 p.m., the great fire department wheelbarrow race is scheduled. Area firefighters in tornout gear will race each other.

A new event to complement Carmichael’s riding lawn mower race, will be the best-decorated mower contest from 4 to 4:30 p.m. Mowers may be decorated in any racing or American theme and a trophy will be awarded for the best decorated.

At 4:30 p.m., the Carmichael’s equipment riding lawn mower race will get under way. Riders will make three laps around the block, with trophies awarded to first, second and third place. Entry forms may be picked up at Carmichael’s at 9127 U.S. 23 or at T&D Outdoors at 622 Greenup Ave.

At 6 p.m., Sierra Tango will perform. From 7 to 8 p.m., local artists will perform.

At 8 p.m., Tom Stephens and friends will take the stage.
