Church group to build house in parking lot

RACELAND — Local residents are being urged to join members of Raceland Christian Church to help build a house in their parking lot Saturday.

The “Help Build Hope” effort through Lexington-based Crossroads Ministries will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the church at 210 Caroline Road. Volunteers will construct the home in one day, and dedicate the structure during the next day’s Sunday services, according to Pastor Jim Matthews.

“We need about 70 people to get it done in one day,” Matthews said, noting the church already has more than half of the workers they need for the job. “And, we can always use more than 70.”

Matthews said all tools are provided by the Help Build Hope project, and Saturday’s labors will be directed toward wall framing. The walls built in Raceland on Saturday will be shipped to Fleming County for use in a Habitat For Humanity home. The local pastor said the group wanted to contribute their walls to a local Habitat For Humanity project, although none were ready for the structural components at this time.

Matthews said church members decided to pursue the building project after being inspired during a winter home-building project.

“During the past Christmas break, 19 members of Raceland Christian Church traveled to Mexico to build a house for a needy family. It was such an encouraging time for the entire church that the decision was made to bring the opportunity right to our very own back yard,” he said. “The church would like to extend an opportunity for anyone in the community who would like to help with this build.”
