Local briefs: 7/4/08

Night golf set at Carter Caves

OLIVE HILL - Carter Caves State Resort Park will host an 18-hole, two-player “Golf by the Full Moon” scramble on July 18.

The first nine holes start at 7 p.m., followed by dinner at 9. The last nine holes start at 10.

Entry fee is $40 per person, which includes golf with cart, dinner, light balls and first- and second-place prizes. Golfers should bring their own flashlights.

Proceeds will go to Kentucky Employees Charitable Campaign.

For more information, call (606) 286-8881 or e-mail marilyn.55@earthlink.net.

Free car seat checks July 16

GRAYSON - Child passenger safety seat technicians from the Safe Kids River Cities Coalition, in conjunction with King’s Daughters Medical Center, will perform free car seat checks from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 16 at the Carter County Farm Bureau, 127 S. Hord St.

Motor vehicle accidents are the leading killer of children younger than 15, according to Safe Kids. Four out of five car seats are installed and/or used incorrectly, endangering the lives of children.

Technicians also will discuss product recall, proper installation and Kentucky’s new booster seat law.

Inspections take about 20 minutes per seat. Child, car seat and vehicle should be present.

For more information, call (888) 377-KDMC.

McKell library to have Fun Day

SOUTH SHORE - The McKell branch of the Greenup County Public Library will have a Fun Day for children of all ages at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

There will be drawings for prizes beginning at 1:30 p.m.

In case of rain, the event will be rescheduled for the following Tuesday.

Unemployment benefits extended

FRANKFORT - Kentuckians who have filed their unemployment insurance claim on or after May 7, 2006, who have exhausted those benefits and are unemployed may be eligible for up to 13 weeks of extended benefits, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment and Training, an agency in the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet.

More than 36,000 Kentuckians may be eligible for the additional unemployment benefits, said Division of Unemployment Insurance director Tony DeName.

Those who are potentially eligible for the federally funded extended benefits program will be notified by mail.

The weekly benefit amount for extended benefits will be the same as the person received for regular unemployment compensation during the original 26-week period.

The maximum amount of benefits is $415 a week and depends on the person’s prior earnings. Potential candidates may apply until March 22.

Gov. Steve Beshear signed the agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor on July 1. Kentucky was one of the first states in the nation to return the agreement to Washington.

The program is effective with the week beginning Sunday.

File a claim for benefits at www.kewes.ky.gov beginning Wednesday or call (859) 547-3362.

No one else was hurt in the accident, which remains under investigation by Officer Jim Dooley.

Church’s children’s event Sunday

ASHLAND - Salt N Light Worship Center, 2020 Carter Ave., will sponsor Kids Night from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday.
