Donation from McDonald's will fight breast cancer

Katie Brandenburg/The Independent

Ashland Golden Arches met pink ribbons on Monday when a local McDonald’s owner presented Susan G. Komen for the Cure with a check for $2,427.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure is a network of breast cancer survivors and activists that raises money for fighting breast cancer through events such as the Race for a Cure.

The McDonald’s Tri-State co-op donated $1 for every McCafe beverage bought during the weekend of April 24 through 26. The Co-op includes 86 restaurants in eastern Kentucky, southeastern Ohio and central West Virginia.

Tom Wolf, who owns 14 stores in Ashland and Huntington, presented the check to Edward Addams, executive director of the Susan G. Kommen Foundation Lexington affiliate.

Wolf said the co-op has been involved with the foundation for three years.

He said researchers are close to making breakthroughs in cancer cures.

“We all need to do our part,” Wolf said.

Restaurants in the co-op raised $9,206 and the money is being presented to different area affiliates. The donation to the affiliate in West Virginia was presented last month.

Addams said he was pleased to accept the donation.

“It was a great surprise for us,” he said.

Addams said 75 percent of the money will be used locally to support breast cancer screening, treatment and education.

He said the Lexington affiliate is considering hosting a Race for the Cure in Ashland that would cover the Tri-State area. If the event takes place it will probably be in March.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded in 1982 and has invested more than $1.2 billion in fighting breast cancer.
