Sandy Hook Water District receives $1.1 million
Money to be used for system improvements and extensions
Staff report
The Independent
FRANKFORT —
State Rep. Rocky Adkins, D-Sandy Hook, and Sen. Walter Blevins, D-West Liberty, recently presented a $1.1 million dollar check to the Sandy Hook Water District for water system improvements and line extensions.
Adkins and Blevins put money in the 2008 budget to continue to improve infrastructure in Elliott County.
“One of my main missions as representative of Elliott County for the past 22 years has been to bring good, clean drinking water to all of our citizens and today’s announcement brings us one step closer to that goal,” Adkins said.
“Improving our infrastructure improves our quality of life while making us viable for future commercial and residential development and additional economic opportunity.”
Work on the water system and approximately 10 miles of line extensions will begin this summer.
A new office with a drive-through customer service window will be built on Howards Creek Road for customer convenience.
New GPS software that will indicate where water lines, valves and fire hydrants are located, new computers and new billing software will be housed in the office. In addition, a new pump station will be built at Wells Creek and a new roof will be installed at the filter building.
“I am so proud to work with Representative Adkins on continuing with these sewer line extensions and water improvements throughout Elliott County,” Blevins said.
“Bringing this $1.1 million project to Sandy Hook means that significant improvements to our infrastructure will be made and in a very short period of time.”
Twenty years ago, Elliott County was one of four Kentucky counties that did not have a water line outside the city limits.
“Today, over 85 percent of Elliott County has access to city water,” Adkins said. “That’s great progress, but I won’t rest until 100 percent of Elliott County has clean water. It’s just too important for our continued growth and economic potential.”
Adkins stressed the importance of the water district’s efforts over the years.
“The district is an essential member of the team which includes local government, state government and elected officials. These folks ensure projects like this one are well-managed, fiscally sound and come in on time. I can’t say enough about the great people at the Sandy Hook Water District. Working with them is always a positive experience.”
