An Ohio man was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by a vehicle on U.S. 23.
Kentucky State Police at Ashland identified the victim as Robert L. Saylers Jr., 48, of Franklin Furnace.
The incident occurred about 9:40 p.m. just south of the U.S. Grant Bridge, which connects South Shore with Portsmouth. According to the KSP, Saylers was standing in one of the southbound lanes of U.S. 23 when he was struck by a 2006 GMC Envoy sport-utility vehicle driven by Brenda Gammon of South Shore.
Two vehicles in front of Gammon swerved to miss Saylers, but Gammon was unable to avoid hitting the man, the KSP said.
Saylers was taken to Southern Ohio Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Gammon was not injured.
Alcohol isn’t believed to have been a factor in the accident, the KSP said. It was not immediately known why Saylers was standing in the roadway.
The accident remains under investigation by Troopers Shannon Jones and Mike Murriel.
KSP troopers were assisted at the accident scene by members of the South Shore Volunteer Fire Department.
