6 from area receive Diederich scholarships

Russell Six high school graduates-to-be from northeastern Kentucky have been chosen to receive scholarships from the John T. and Ada M. Diederich Educational Trust.

The scholarships cover up to $12,000 per year in tuition, room, board and fees.

This year’s recipients are:

‰James “Alex” Williams of West Carter High School, son of Tony and Leigh Williams of Olive Hill. He plans to attend Morehead State University.

‰Kyle Tad Meranda of WCHS, son of Tad Meranda of Olive Hill. He plans to attend MSU.

‰Matthew Kiser Shaffer of East Carter High School, son of Steve and Francie Shaffer. He plans to attend Kentucky Christian University.

‰Toby Randall Hicks of Russell High School, son of Toby and Sandy Hicks of Russell. He plans to attend the University of Kentucky.

‰Seth Dale Harper of Raceland-Worthington High School, son of Ryan and Connie Harper of Greenup. He plans to attend MSU.

‰Gregory Luke Bender of Russell High, son of David and Kim Gabbard of Flatwoods. He plans to attend the University of Charleston.

Students must have lived in Boyd, Carter, Greenup, Lawrence or Martin counties for at least three years and received a grade-point average in high school of 2.25 to 3.55 to be eligible for the scholarship.

They must maintain at least a 2.0 average by the end of their freshman year to maintain eligibility.

Recipients are chosen based on community service, work ethic, leadership ability and potential for success.
