Inmate indicted in jail stabbing
Edward Crow also charged with count of promoting contraband
By KENNETH HART - The Independent
CATLETTSBURG —
A federal inmate from West Virginia has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing another inmate in the neck at the Boyd County Detention Center.
Grand jurors also charged Edward Crow with one count of promoting contraband, Boyd Commonwealth’s Attorney David Justice said.
The stabbing occurred on Sunday. According to Justice, the victim, Terrence Haliburton, was also being held on federal charges.
Crow and Haliburton has previously been cellmates in West Virginia, Justice said. Crow feigned suicidal tendencies in order to get himself placed in a cell with Haliburton, and, once there, he allegedly stabbed Haliburton five times in the neck with a homemade knife, or shank, that he had fashioned from a piece of heavy wire, he said.
Following the stabbing, other inmates jumped on Crow and took the shank away from him, Justice said.
Haliburton was hospitalized for several days, but has since been released, Justice said. Boyd County Jailer Joe Burchett said Thursday that Haliburton had been transferred to another facility. He said Crow remained in the Boyd lockup, but had been placed in isolation.
Crow was sentenced in May of last year to 235 months in prison in U.S. District Court in Charleston for illegal transportation of firearms, according to federal court records. Haliburton is awaiting trial on drug-related charges.
Attempted murder is a Class B felony that carries a prison sentence of 10 to 20 years.
A grand jury indictment is a formal accusation of a crime and does not establish guilt.
