Chelsea Clinton to visit Ashland
By MARK MAYNARD - The Independent
ASHLAND —
Chelsea Clinton will be in town for an open house at her mother’s headquarters here Monday morning.
Chelsea, the daughter of Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and former President Bill Clinton, will be at the Ashland headquarters at 4218 Winchester Ave. between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. The event is open to the public.
Hillary Clinton has vowed to continue campaigning for her party’s nomination and aides said the strategy is to catch Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in the popular vote. The latest SurveyUSA poll has Clinton leading Obama 62 percent to 28 percent in the May 20 Kentucky primary. A big win is a must in both Kentucky and West Virginia, whose primary is Tuesday, for her to have any chance.
Hillary Clinton is also strapped for money. Revelations came out last week that she loaned her campaign $6.4 million over the past few weeks. Earlier in the campaign, Clinton loaned her campaign $5 million.
However, her daughter is undeterred.
Speaking at an event Thursday in Frankfort located next door to the Kentucky Democratic Party offices, she said, “I know if we just keep working hard, we will win. Talk to as many people as you can about why you support my mother.”
Clinton’s campaign had some disappointing results during last week’s primaries in North Carolina and Indiana. Clinton lost badly in North Carolina while winning by a smaller margin in Indiana than her campaign had hoped.
Several pundits and some Democrats have said Obama has all but wrapped up the nomination and some suggested Clinton withdraw to allow the party to unite behind Obama to defeat Republican John McCain in November.
Clinton Kentucky Campaign Manager and former KDP Chairman Jerry Lundergan said Clinton has a better chance than Obama to beat McCain in November and has demonstrated her electoral strength in winning such battleground states as Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Chelsea Clinton told the crowd of about 80 gathered in Frankfort as much.
“I fundamentally think my mom is the stronger candidate and would make the better president,” she said. “We just have to keep talking to people about that and if we keep working at it, we’ll win.”
