Wurtland sets work session
WURTLAND - The City of Wurtland Board of Commissioners will have a work session at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss various city matters.
Dog walk slated for May 17
SUMMIT - The Ashland-Boyd County Dog Park will sponsor a Memorial Dog Walk on May 17 at the dog park. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. and the walk at 9 a.m.
A dog swimsuit competition will be at 10:30 a.m. and a weiner dog race will be at 11 a.m.
Entry fees are $5 for each event and registration forms are available at abcdogpark.com and local vets and groomers.
Proceeds will benefit the spay/neuter fund at the Boyd County Animal Shelter.
McKell seeking site-based noms
SOUTH SHORE - McKell Middle School is accepting parent and teacher nominations to the site-based decision making council now through Friday in the front office.
Elections will take place Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. for parents.

Lost and found pets now online
ASHLAND - The Boyd County Animal Shelter has begun posting pictures of lost and found pets on its Web site, www.boydcountyky.
net/animal_shelter.cfm. Pictures will be available for seven days after a pet is brought to the shelter.
Scope Towers to get new roofs
ASHLAND - The Housing Authority of Ashland has signed a contract with Wilder-based Imbus Roofing Co. Inc. for installation of new roofs on both buildings at Scope Towers.
The contract was for $430,535 and includes all of the canopies, including the one between the buildings in the courtyard in addition to some rooftop repairs. The new roofs will carry a 20-year warranty. The current roofs were built in 1988 and carried a 15-year warranty.
Work is expected to begin June 2 and, depending on weather, should be completed within six weeks.
Special Boyd meeting set
CATLETTSBURG - The Boyd County Fiscal Court has called a special meeting Thursday at 3 p.m. to discuss the budget.
Lewis authorities make dope bust
VANCEBURG - Lewis County deputies and Maysville police raided a Tollesboro residence Monday and found drugs and paraphernalia, according to a statement from Sheriff William D. Lewis.
Deputies arrested Ronald Wayne Hardymon, 47, and Carrie Smith, 26, both of Tollesboro, when they raided Hardymon’s home, according to the statement.
Both were charged with second- and third-degree drug possession, according to the statement.
Deputies also arrested Douglas Hampton, 46, also of Tollesboro, and charged him with third-degree drug possession and marijuana possession, according to the statement.
All three were taken to the Lewis County Detention Center.
Assisted by officers with the Maysville Police Canine Unit, deputies searched Hardymon’s home and found the drugs and marijuana, some of which were hidden in pillowcases.
Fishing derby set at Vesuvius
PEDRO - The Wayne National Forest will have a children’s fishing derby on Saturday at the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area.
The derby, for children 15 and younger, will start at 9 a.m. at the boardwalk.
The derby will include hot dogs and beverages, contests and educational activities. Registration is available the day of the derby but preregistration is suggested. Call (740) 534-6500.
Children should bring poles and tackle and must be accompanied by a parents or guardians.
Boyd election school May 15
CATLETTSBURG - The Boyd County Board of Elections will have its annual election school for poll workers at 6:30 p.m. May 15 at Boyd County Middle School.
