Police: Man may not have heard train

Staff report
The Independent

IRONTON A 29-year-old man who died after being hit by a train on Friday night may not have heard it coming, because he was wearing a headset for a CD player, according to Ironton police.

David Monroe, a resident at the Close to Home assisted living facility in Ironton, was killed about 9:30 p.m. Monroe appeared to be walking on the tracks when the train hit him just off the 600 block of North Second Street in west Ironton, officials said.

It is the fifth railroad-related death in Ironton within the past six years and the second in the past month.

Charlene Ash, 49, was killed April 6 at the Jefferson Street crossing. The investigation into her death is ongoing.

In January 2007, teenagers Lacey Parnell and Jamiesue Barker were killed as they walked along railroad tracks near the McPherson Street crossing. Authorities believe the girls did not hear the train coming either.

The body of Pamela Goldcamp was found on the railroad tracks near Mulberry Street on March 28, 2002. Her family believed she was murdered and her body placed on the tracks to cover up the crime but no charges were ever filed.
