Despite unexpected warm temperatures, organizers of last weekend’s “Walk for the Animals” in Lawrence County declared it a success, with more than 35 dogs and 70 animal lovers joining in the procession through downtown Louisa on Saturday.
The second annual animal walk is a fundraising event for the Lawrence County Humane Society and Animal Shelter.
The names of the top two prize winners were announced at the conclusion of the Walk. Jamie Lowe of Kenova, WV., who raised $337 for the Shelter, claimed first place while the second-place prize went to Emily Morgan of Ft. Gay, W.V., who raised $210.
Lowe received a prize package with more than $300 worth of merchandise and gift certificates donated by local merchants, including Louisa Sporting Goods, Tri-State Rehab Services of Louisa, Donna’s Catering, The Independent and others. Morgan received a prize package worth more than $200 worth of merchandise and gift certificates donated by the local merchants.
Participants were also involved with various activities in Main Street Park, including a demonstration by the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit, face painting, childrens’ crafts, pet portraits, a microchip demonstration, and doggie contests.
The Lawrence County Arts Council announced Lauren Perry was the winner of the Animal Walk Poster Contest. Perry will receive a $15 gift certificate from the Painted Cow Gallery.
Organizers said there are still a few T-shirts, sweatshirts and doggie bandanas from this year’s walk available for purchase. For more information contact Beverly Pack at sixcatpack@mindspring.com or call (606) 638-3140.
