Transportation Cabinet awards northeast Ky. road project upgrades

Staff report
The Independent

FLEMINGSBURG More than $2 million in contracts awarded by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet will mean upgrades to nearly 11 miles of roadways in Carter, Fleming and Boyd counties in Department of Highways District 9.

Projects include resurfacing roads with new asphalt to boost Kentucky’s transportation reliability and improve safety for motorists.

“These are important investments in our transportation infrastructure,” Transportation Secretary Joe Prather said. “A solid transportation infrastructure is essential to our communities everywhere in the commonwealth.”

In District 9, low-bid contracts were awarded April 3 for the following work:

‰Resurface 1.06 miles of Ky. 1 in Carter County from C.W. Stevens Boulevard/Ky. 1947 north to Ky. 7, Mountain Enterprises Inc., $389,404.50.

‰Resurface 2.3 miles of Ky. 11 in Fleming County from the Bath County line to near Eddie Drive and 3.26 miles of Ky. 111 from the north end of Fox Creek Bridge to the junction of new construction, Eaton Asphalt Paving Co. Inc., $473,848.

‰Resurface 3.6 miles of U.S. 23 in two sections between Ky. 3294 in Catlettsburg and 40th Street in Ashland; and a half mile of Ky. 966 (Trace Road) from south Big Run Road to U.S. 60, Mountain Enterprises Inc., $1,142,171.80.

This construction will benefit the traveling public’s safety, said Bart Bryant, District 9 chief district engineer.

“Adding a new layer of blacktop ensures roadway surfaces remain smooth and free of obstacles,” he said. “It’s part of the cabinet’s mission to maintain a reliable transportation system.”
