Fall for pumpkins

C-K Autumnfest continues through weekend; Pumpkin House to be ready for visitors

CEREDO — The C-K Autumnfest, with many activities scheduled next weekend, has already gotten under way as Ric Griffith’s Pumpkin House is ready for visitors.

The pumpkin house grew out of Griffith’s love for carving pumpkins to decorate his three-story Victorian home with his family.

Now, he and other festival workers recruit volunteers to carve the more than 3,000 pumpkins that adorn the house and surrounding area.

Griffith and his family live in a house built in 1981 by Joseph S. Miller, a West Virginia statesman who served as state auditor and was appointed to a Cabinet position twice by President Grover Cleveland.

The festival, which grew from interest in the house, has boosted the economy in Ceredo and Kenova. Restaurants have reported as much as a 15 percent increasein business during the festival

Activities that are standard parts of the festival include Nightmare at Dreamland, a haunted trail at Dreamland Pool, a parade and pumpkin-lighting ceremony at Kenova McDonald’s, an arts and crafts show, presentations about the paranormal at the Ramsdell House in Ceredo, scavenger hunts, a bake-off and live music.

Vendors will be set up at the Pumpkin House as long as its in operation.
