Library offers great resources for graduates

ASHLAND — As spring turns into summer, one thing we can rely on is graduation season. Between May and June, the stores are inundated with merchandise proclaiming proudly, “Class of 2014!”  It’s a wonderful achievement and should be celebrated.  But then reality sets in. As a responsible adult, it’s time to get a job and to start on a career path. But where do you start?

Colleges and high schools prepare you to find A2 + B2 = C2 or to dissect a frog, but where do you go to find career resources and résumé assistance?  The library, of course!

At the Boyd County Public Library, we are proud to offer graduates who are entering the workforce (or even someone looking for a career change) many solutions to their job-hunting dilemmas. If you’ve never written a résumé, we have numerous books on the subject.  Even better, you can access Cypress Resume with your library card and use a simple form-based program to create one from scratch. Cypress Resume will let you post your résumé online with a unique URL link you can share with potential employers.  Cypress Resume makes it easy to customize your résumé or cover letter to individual jobs. So if you’re unsure of your career path, you can apply to be a medical transcriptionist one day and a store manager the next! Visit thebookplace.org/cypress-resume.

We also offer Tutor.com Adult Education and Career Center. Tutor.com offers you the ability to work with a tutor one-on-one from 2 to 11 p.m.every day. Job seekers can get assistance with résumé writing, interview preparation and more.  No time to work one-on-one? You can upload your résumé in the Tutor.com Career Center and a tutor will e-mail you back with suggestions and changes. You can also access thousands of videos, tutorials, and templates from their comprehensive database 24/7. Simply visit tutor.com/boydcountypl or download the Tutor.com iOS app.

The library also offers Job and Career Accelerator from Learning Express Library. Job and Career Accelerator is designed as an all-in-one product. You can match your interests and skill set with the career that’s best for you. Curious what it takes to become a welder? Job and Career Accelerator can tell you what types of skills and training are needed in thousands of careers.  You can create a résumé and a cover letter in the program and then search more than 5 million job postings to find the one that is right for you. Have an upcoming interview and feeling a little nervous? Use this service to practice interviewing skills. They even offer tips and tricks when you are considering accepting a job offer (you might get a better package if you negotiate!) Visit thebookplace.org/job-career-accelerator

Overall, the library is here to help you become whatever you want to be.  With books, online programs and our friendly staff we can help you achieve all your goals and dreams.  Reach your full potential at the library! All resources available at thebookplace.org or use our BCPL mobile app.
