ASHLAND — By LEE WARD

ASHLAND A new nonprofit group is planning a concert this summer intended to offer a positive social gathering for music lovers.

The ’70s Rock Stars Concert! Memorial/Benefit will be July 6 at El Hasa Shrine Temple.

The event will feature performances by Corky Holbrook, Steve French, Jonnie Downs, Jimi Downs, Jim McKnight, Phil Osborne, Tom Jones, Bruce Kazee, Dave Panchot, Dan Williams, Dave Thompson, Gary Donalson, Matt Miller, Robin Tackett and Stillwater. Plans are still in the works and the lineup could grow, organizer Jane Wells said.

Wells said this is the 25th anniversary of the death of John Eidson, who the concert honors. Eidson also was a musician and frequently performed with most of the musicians who will perform at his memorial concert.

“He took a bullet for me,” she said. Wells is the author of the book “Run Jane Run,” which details her experience in a domestic violence situation that resulted in Eidson’s death.

Wells has started a nonprofit called Alternative Responses, an organization that aims to tackle drug abuse, which often contributes to domestic violence, as well as target the batterer.

She said she hopes to raise $4,000, which will cover the cost of the concert; any money raised beyond that amount will go toward projects of Alternative Responses.

Wells said the idea to have a concert as a fundraiser was a natural.

“The Country Music Highway runs right through the middle of this place,” she said.

But one of Wells’ primary goals of the concert is to allow her daughter with Eidson, Erica, to meet her father’s friends and see them perform and, perhaps, sing with them. At 6, Erica Eidson was a witness to her father’s murder.

Music at the concert will include a variety, from bluegrass to rock.

“It will have a little of everything, from the Raspberries to the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix to country to gospel,” Wells said.

“It will be very representative of what is here. That’s why so many people from here have succeeded, there is such a variety of music here.”

Wells is seeking donations to make the concert a reality on the fundraising site gofundme.com.

Spots in the program are available as are ticket packages. Patrons also may choose their own amount.

She said no tickets will be sold at the door so advance registration is required.
