ASHLAND — The 1414 Gallery at TSHD architects will present “Earth and Sky: Photography Works by Jeff Ball” with an opening reception from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

A love of astronomy as a child ultimately inspired Ball to pursue the hobby of photographing celestial formations.

“In 1994, a heavenly spectacle captured my imagination — the unique occurence of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 crashing into the planet Jupiter,” he said. “I was consumed with learning astronomy in the amateur community and became a regular reader of ‘Sky and Telescope.’ The back pages of the magazine are reserved for the most intriguing images of our universe taken by amateurs. I was compelled to learn how to capture celestial images.”

Ball also photographs landscapes and architectural subjects and dabbles in abstract photography.

“Earth and Sky” will be on exhibit at the venue through Nov. 30.

Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed for lunch noon to 1 p.m. Evening viewings will be during Ashland’s First Friday Art Walks today and Nov. 2 from 5 to 8 p.m.

For more information, call Debbie Gaines at (606) 393-5190 or email dgaines@TSHDarchitects.com or call Ball at (304) 634-0372.

The gallery is at 1414 Winchester Ave. in Ashland.
