So much is owed to bees and so few may realize it.
According to the National Pollinator Defense Fund:
‰One out of three bites of food is becuase of bees and other pollinators.
‰The human diet and our advanced civilization is a direct and dependent result of pollinators.
‰Bees have the third highest value to U.S. agriculture, contributing $20 to $30 billion to the industry and following cattle and swine.
‰A loss of just 200 bee colonies affects the beekeeper and the grower: the beekeeper suffers an estimated loss of $50,000 while the grower could lose $4.3 million in crops because they were not pollinated.
‰Bees in agricultural areas suffer much more than bees in non-agricultural areas.
‰Up to 39 different pesticides have been found in beehive samples.
Michele Colopy of the National Pollinator Defense Fund is scheduled to speak at the October meeting of the Little Sandy Beekeepers Club, addressing some of the current problems beekeepers face. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Carter County Extension Office. The office is at 94 Fairgrounds Road in Grayson.
John Blasius, president of the club and owner of Smokey Valley Honey, said topics of the talk will include the adverse effects of pesticides on pollinators, the fund’s work to protect bees and native pollinators vital to a sustainable and affordable food supply.
The National Pollinator Defense Fund was developed by the American Honey Producers Association to address national pesticide policy. Their goals include involvement in establishment of law regulating pesticide use, legal recourse for those who have sustained damage from pesticides, providing advocacy, guidance and tools for beekeepers and raising awareness about potential adverse effects of pesticides on pollinators.
