Exhibit at Highlands aims to make healthy eating a habit for children

ASHLAND — In an effort to encourage healthy eating habits among children, the Highlands Museum and Discovery Center recently opened a new exhibit called “Healthy Food Choices” in the discovery center.

Curator Heather Akers said executive director Carol Allen suggested the exhibit, which is based on federal guidelines for health eating.

The exhibit includes a poster of the government’s MyPlate diagram, which shows children how much of their plate should be made up of protein, grain, vegetables, fruit and dairy.

Aimed at children pre-school through sixth grade, the exhibit has children pick out a magnetic piece of food and place it in the category it belongs to establish the child knows which category it goes in. Then, they choose foods from the various categories and place them on their plate.

The permanent exhibit also includes information for parents.

Akers said the museum hopes to expand the exhibit.
