A watercolor painting titled “Out of the Darkness and Into the Light” by Morehead State University’s Dongfeng Li, associate professor of art and design, was accepted by the exhibition jurors for inclusion in the 147th American Watercolor Society Annual International Exhibition in New York.
The society has a juried exhibition annually of watercolor painting from artists throughout the world. This year’s exhibition opened this week and will continue through April 20 at the Salmagundi Club, 47 Fifth Ave., New York.
The AWS annual is one of the premier watercolor exhibits in the world. More than 1,200 artists from throughout the United States and 12 foreign countries submitted their work to a panel of jurors chosen from signature members of the AWS
The prize jurors awarded “Out of the Darkness and Into the Light” the Mario Cooper and Dale Meyers Medal and $2,000. With his inclusion in this year’s exhibition, Li has become a signature member of the American Watercolor Society.
A nationally acclaimed artist in oriental brush, watercolors, pastel portraits and figure painting, he began his art career in China, then earned a master of fine arts degree from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He previously taught at Webster University in St. Louis.
The American Watercolor Society is a nonprofit membership organization that began in 1866 to promote the art of watercolor painting in America.
