The Miss Flame Pageants will be Aug. 24 at Catlettsburg Elementary School gym. The schedule for categories is:
11 a.m. — Baby pageant (boys and girls birth to 36 months) and Little Mr. Fire Chief (ages 3 through 5) and Junior Mister Fire Chief (ages 6 through 8).
1 p.m. — Teeny, Tiny and Little Miss Flame (ages 3 through 8).
7 p.m. — Little Junior Miss Flame (ages 9 through 11), Junior MIss Flame (ages 12 through 14) and Miss Flame (ages 15 to 19).
Entry fee is $40. Applications are available at the Catlettsburg Fire Department; Angie’s Action Wear in Catlettsburg; Kady Bs, Miller’s Insurance, Lara’s Brida Shop and Tri-State Pawn and Jewelry in Ashland; Wilma’s Dress Shop at the Kyova Mall; Miller’s Insurance in Greenup; and Wilma’s Dress Shop in Grayson. One parent is admitted free.

Breast cancer fundraiser set
The American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® will sponsor its fourth annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K walk Oct. 19 in Central Park.

SOMC triathlons upcoming
Southern Ohio Medical Center will host its second annual “Tri For Your LIFE” Sprint Triathlon Aug. 24 and 25 with events for children and adults.
Last year’s event brought in more than 100 competitors from as far away as Florida and Minnesota.
The “Kids Triathlon” for children between 11 and 14 is 9 a.m. on Aug. 24; children between 7 and 10 will begin at 9:45 a.m. The triathlon will begin in the Shawnee State pool, followed by a bike course along the floodwall murals before finishing with a run through the college campus. For children not quite ready to compete against others, there will also be a non-competitive “Little Bear Run.”
The adult triathlon will begin at 7 p.m. Aug. 25, beginning with a 200-meter swim in the SOMC LIFE Center pool, followed by a 10-mile bike course and a 5K run through the streets of Portsmouth.
Both triathlons can be run individually or by a team of individuals. A duathlon is also an option. Registration can be completed online at hfpracing.com. Deadline to register is 11:59 p.m. Aug. 22.
Registration for the Kids Triathlon is $25 through July 31, then $35 until the Aug. 22 deadline. Relay, or team, registration is $35 through July 31 and then $45 until the deadline.
For the Sprint Triathlon, registration costs $45 (or $55 for a relay or team) through July 31, then $55 (or $65 for a relay or team) until the Aug. 22 deadline.
Library to host book signing
The Boyd County Public Library will host a book signing for author Victoria LaVonne of Huntington from 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 10 at the main branch, 1740 Central Ave.
LaVonne will have copies of her new book, “When Momma Died,” available for sale.
